Jacksonville University students participated in the Second Annual Pep Rally Thursday. The events for the evening included a float contest, a Greek Role Call, a root beer-chugging contest, a wing-eating contest, a presentation of the Senior football players and a presentation of the cheerleaders.

After the floats passed, the National Pan-Hellenic Council Greeks opened the Rally with their Greek Role Call. This was an opportunity for the NPHC Greeks to “rep their organization and to show spirit,” as sorority member Jade Cargill described it. Interfraternity and National Panhellenic Conference also made an appearance at the rally, cheering as their names were called by the MC.

The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity began with a stroll to their signature song “Mic Check.” Following this, the fraternity members, fondly referred to as “Alphas,” called their sister sorority to the bottom of the stage to support them in their next stroll. The fraternity ended their portion of the Role Call with their call of “A-Phi-06.”

The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, sister sorority to the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was next to participate in the Role Call and began in the same way. They opened with their own stroll to their song “Set It Off.” After a short stint of strolling, the Alphas joined the girls for a group stroll. Closely following this, the girls strolled one last time by themselves and ended with their distinctive call of “Skeewe.”

The final sorority for the Greek Role Call was the Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Like the Greeks in line before them, they followed with the same protocol. The Deltas began with a stroll to their song “Got to be Real.” After a second stroll, the girls ended their portion of the Role Call with their signature call of “Oo-Oop.”

The next event was a root beer-drinking contest. The rules were simple: each contestant was to be given two cans of root beer and the first to finish the winner. This year’s winner was a sophomore by the name of Luis Lobo.

Quickly following this, the wing-eating contest began. Each contestant was given 12 chicken wings to eat and the first to finish would be the winner. This contest’s victor was junior Charles Dowdy.

The football players were then presented to the crowd. They called out the names of their Senior team members. Wisly Desire, Kwadwo Mensah and Mike Mayoral were amongst the many to be recognized.

The Pep Rally was closed with the revealing of the scores for the floats that were presented earlier in the afternoon. Alpha Epsilon Phi came in third place with a score of 64 points. Close behind with a score of 65 points was Sigma Chi. The International Students Association came in first place with a grand total of 85 points.

Spectator Brianna Dunmore pointed out that the Pep Rally had “potential to do a lot better in the future,” and that is the hope for next year’s Pep Rally.
