The Jacksonville University Baseball team (12-21, 2-7), had a rough week getting shutout by Bethune Cookman (16-12), 6-0 and dropping 2 of 3 to Atlantic Sun rival Stetson University (21-10, 5-5).
The Wildcats of Bethune Cookman rode strong pitching to a 6-0 victory over the Dolphins last Tuesday at John Sessions Stadium. JU struggled to get anything substantial going at the plate all night.
Senior Sean Green (0-3) took the loss on the evening. Freshman RC Williams and Sophomores Adam Maxon and Will Flor each hurled scoreless relief inning for the Dolphins.
“We got beat by a better team tonight,” said Head Coach Terry Alexander.
JU’s next battle took them to DeLand Fla. to face the Stetson Hatters. The Dolphins came out hot and were able to hang on for a 9-6 win in game 1 of a 3 game set.
Zachary Houck came up huge with a 2 out RBI in the 8th to break a 5-5 tie. Adam Brett Walker II led the offense going 3-5 with 2 homeruns, scoring 3 times and plating 4 RBI’s. Jimmy Appleby (2-0) got the win and Chris Anderson picked up the save.
“This was a good, hard fought win for us,” Alexander said.
In game 2, JU had the lead but watched it slip away over the last few innings. The Hatters were able to plate 5 runs over the last 3 innings on the way to a 9-5 victory. Alex McRae (2-4), took the loss.
“We were not sharp late in this ball game,” Alexander said.
In Saturdays rubber match of the 3 game series, the Dolphins saw yet another lead disappear late as the “one bad inning” continues to haunt JU. The Dolphins just seemed to fall apart at the seams in the 7th inning of the ball game giving Stetson the 8-3 victory and a 2-1 series win. Chris Anderson, who got the save in game 1, received the loss.
“That one bad inning did us in once again,” Alexander said.
JU will look to bounce back as they host Georgia Southern Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Dolphins fell to Georgia Southern 17-11 in their earlier meeting in Statesboro, Ga.
