The JU women’s Lacrosse team exploded for 20 goals on their way to a 20-5 victory over Detroit in their National Lacrosse Conference opener.

Freshman Holly Ventimiglia lead the team with 3 goals notching her second straight hat trick. Ellyn Spangenberg, Chelsea Watts, Abbey Warnken, and Kayleigh Hynes all had 2 goals on the day for the Dolphins.

“I’m just executing my shots right now,” said Ventimiglia.

JU wasted no time getting on the board as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Senior Jess Hotchkiss led the JU defensive attack with 4 groundballs, 4 draw controls and 2 forced turnovers.

JU, (2-1,1-0), would next play host to St. Joe’s (Pa.) as part of a triple header at D.B. Milne Field. They picked up right where they left off offensively despite falling behind early 2-0 to St. Joes.

Sophomore Jen Cosgrove paced the offense with 5 goals propelling JU to a 14-7 win. She netted 2 in the 1st half and 3 in the 2nd half. Cosgrove leads the Dolphins with 12 goals and 14 points on the year.

“I’m staying focused and playing my game,” said Cosgrove. “This is not something I expected but I knew coming out as a freshman I had some jitters but this year I want to step it up.”

Junior Ellyn Spangenberg tallied 3 goals on the day. The Dolphin defense held St Joes leading scorer to 1goal on their way to a 14-7 victory.

JU now had a 9 game home winning streak dating back to last year. The Dolphins (3-1, 1-0), will next face Temple Wednesday at 3:30 at D.B. Milne Field.
