Softball goes 2-2 in weekend tournament

Dolphins take two over North Carolina but fall short against Louisville and Notre Dame

The JU softball team garnered a pair of wins and losses last weekend in the JU Tournament as they faced off against No. 25 Louisville, Notre Dame, and North Carolina.

In the home opener the Dolphins were scoreless against Louisville losing the game 5-0, according to judolphins.com.

With that the Fins were able to bounce back splitting a double-header Saturday.

The first matchup against North Carolina would be easy for the ladies in green as they took it to the Tar Heels 3-1.

Senior Codi Kelly hit a solo home run to right field and Jackie DiPiazza hit a double allowing pinch runner Sable Lee to score from second.

The last of the runs batted in would be from Emily Sanchez giving Karson Tuck a well deserved score after crushing a triple to center field.

But the same couldn’t be said against the Fighting Irish as they defeated JU 9-1, according to judolphins.com.

Notre Dame scored once in the bottom of the first, five in the second, one in the third and two in the fifth, while Jacksonville’s lone run in the top of the fourth was scored by Cecile Gomez.

The Dolphins shut it down on Sunday in a shutout win in the second matchup against North Carolina 1-0.

By putting up a double-play in the bottom of the seventh JU was able to squash the Tar Heel’s last-effort at scoring, according to judolphins.com

A number of Jacksonville’s players made impactful plays on the field and at-bat, with Lexie Ballard opening with a single to shortstop and Victoria Brown following, two batters later, with a single to right to advance Ballard to third.

In the next at-bat with two outs on the line, Codi Kelly recorded an RBI single to right field that scored Ballard for the only run of the game.

The lady Dolphins will travel to Gainesville on Wednesday to face No. 2 Florida.
