Another school year is upon us, and for the underclassmen along with some seniors, that means dorm rooms.
Whether you are living in Oak, Williams, or Botts Hall, a few things are the same. A couple of them would be the dreary walls and inadequate outlets. If you’re looking for a few ideas to help you out, these tips may help.
The first thing you should do is pick up a power strip if you don’t have one already. This can give you a lot more flexibility when arranging the set up of your room, especially if you’ve got appliances with short cords.
There are plenty of options beyond the traditional strips you see in most stores. Make sure to check it out online to ensure you find the best one to fit your needs.
Some examples are the Belkin Clamp-On Surge Protector, which keeps the cords off the ground and out of the way. Another is the PowerSquid, which has six tentacles outlets instead of the traditional block. These can be found at Office Depot or Wal-Mart locations.
Now that we’ve dealt with the appliances, something has to go up on the walls, whether it’s to make the room cozier, show off your tastes, or even just to distract from the plain-white walls.
Something fun you can do with your room is to put a “rasterized” photo up on your wall. A “rasterized” image is one that has been broken up into several different parts, so you can print them out and post them together into a mural. You can use any image at arje.net/rasterbator.com.
Despite having a room worthy of showing off, some people won’t want their rooms bright all the time. If this is the case, you can pick up a cheap curtain rod for around $5 from Wal-Mart or Target, and some blackout curtains for under $20. The sun won’t wake you up anymore, so make sure you set an alarm!
All in all, the best way to make the most out of your room is to find the arrangement that works best for you. Just remember, most beds can be adjusted for storage space underneath, and you probably don’t need more than one fridge and microwave.
Make a plan for your room. Draw out what you plan to do, and it’ll be much easier to adjust your space accordingly to suit your needs.
