JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Could you imagine leaving everything you once knew in hopes of a better future?

Nliba Nguimbous could tell you all about it.

Nguimbous, a junior aviation management major here at Jacksonville University, came to America seeking opportunity and is determined to find and take advantage of it.

“Before I do anything, I ask myself how it will help me in the future,” Nguimbous says.

Moving from Africa to the United States three years ago is one example of the measures.    Ngiumbous has taken to ensure success. He has also made a point to be involved on campus.

Ngiumbous is president of the Leadership Advisory Council, vice president of the Student Government Association, member of the Soccer Club, and happens to be a head residential advisor as well.

But this busy schedule fails to keep a big smile off his face. Millie Overjero, a junior political science major, works with Nguimbous in the residential field. She says he is one of the most positive, hard-working guys she has ever met.

“Nliba brings so much excitement to the table every single day,” Overjero says. “He leads with passion and makes me proud to work with him.”

Ngiumbous makes it clear that he is not in it for just himself. Naturally, he intends to go back to home one day and help improve his country, especially when it comes to airline travel, but he also plans to leave his mark on America. He says he plans to take in as much knowledge as he can so that when the time comes, he’ll be ready to make a difference.

“The more I learn, the better chance I have to make the world a better place,” Ngiumbous says.

Facing enormous pressure from his family back home, Nguimbous understands that all eyes are on him. However, this pressure fails to shake Nguimbous. Instead he turns to God and takes comfort in his faith. His Christian belief does not go unnoticed by his peers.

“I believe it is because of his faith that makes him act the way he does,” Overjero says. “Nliba selflessly continues to put others first and always makes sure his coworkers are taken care of.”

Edward Agyemang-Gyau, a junior accounting major, works with Nguimbous in the Student Government Association and believes that faith in God is what keeps him so strong.

“Nliba does not worry because he knows that God will lead him in the right direction,” Agyemang-Gyau says.

After Nguimbous finishes school, he said he hopes to go back and forth from Africa to America working for an airline company. He says he is grateful for the opportunities he has been blessed with and is excited to make a difference wherever he ends up.

“The ball is in my hands now,” Nguimbous says. “It’s time for me to live up to my expectations.”

Overjero and Agyemang-Gyau say they are confident that their friend will make his family proud.

“Whatever he does, Nliba will continue to leave a positive impression wherever he goes,” Agyemang-Gyau says. “His legacy will be remembered.”
