JU men’s basketball loses to UNF by one point

BasketballMBB-CampusConnection (2 of 3)From tailgating before the game and body painting to posters and signs,  students came out in large numbers to support their men’s basketball team against UNF in their last game of the season on Thursday, Feb. 28. The Swisher gymnasium was filled with fans and energy for the River City Rumble. In the end, North Florida came out victorious over Jacksonville by one point with an ending score of 81-80.

The Dolphins came out strong keeping up with UNF. After the first 10 minutes, things began to go south for the team, with UNF able to reign in a strong lead. The first half ended with UNF leading 49-38. The momentum continued into the second half. UNF gained 18 points with JU only gaining 11.

With about 10 minutes left to play, the score was 67-49. Jacksonville then began to slowly pick away at UNF’s lead. The Dolphins gained 28 points in the next nine and a half minutes, while the Ospreys were only able to come up with 12. Jacksonville was down 79-77 with only 15 seconds left. However, two free throws by a UNF player made the game a multiple score game for Jacksonville. This would be the deciding factor of the game, even with Dolphin Marcel White coming up with a three in the final seconds of the game, JU still fell short by one point.

Although defeated, Jacksonville still held better stats over UNF in many areas. The Dolphins only had 10 turnovers to the Ospreys’ 16. UNF made up for this in their points scored off JU turnovers, with 17 points to 14.

Kori Babineaux and J.R. Holder were the driving forces behind the JU offense. Babineaux scored 24 points and Holder followed with 23 points. Babineaux and White also contributed greatly in rebounds, accumulating a combined 13.

Although Jacksonville was not able to come up with the win, they were able keep the score close and the game exciting. The Jacksonville men’s basketball team finished their season with a record of 16-16.
