JU Men’s Basketball Wins Big Conference Games

The Dolphins Men’s Basketball team jumped out to an early lead versus Stetson Saturday, Jan. 30 at Swisher Gymnasium, never looking back as they went on to win 75-60.

Junior Marcel White led the way with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while junior J.R. Holder contributed 15 points as well with a 56 percent field goal percentage. JU improved to 13-11 and went on to take on Florida Gulf Coast University at Swisher Gymnasium at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 1

The matchup against FGCU was a close match for JU. The Dolphins came out strong to take a comfortable lead. As the first half progressed, FGCU was able to cut the lead down to two points. JU quickly responded, pulling ahead once again making the score 43-32 at the end of the first half.

A similar progression occurred in the second half of the game. However, this time the Eagles continued to keep the pressure on and it remained close to the end. With one minute left in the game, the score was 78-75. Ten more points were scored, five from each team, keeping the Dolphins ahead to win with a score of 83-80.

“As a team we just need to continue to play hard and work even harder in practice to not only maintain, but get better on the court as a whole,” Holder said.

Holder, number 15, led the team in points with 23 points. Senior Kori Babineaux, number 55, also contributed by putting up 22 points. Jacksonville kept turnovers to a minimal five and was able to turn FGCU’s turnovers into 11 points. After the win, Jacksonville is now 14-11(6-2 in A-Sun). Jacksonville is ranked second in the A-Sun Conference, only trailing UNF by one game.

The Dolphins travel to face Stetson in their home turf on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Edmunds Center.
