On October 17 the Jacksonville University Dolphins went up against Florida Gulf Coast University at home in the Swisher Gymnasium and fell just short to the Eagles in five sets to end the game 3-2.
The Dolphins initially came out a little slow on energy, giving the Eagles the first 5-0 lead. The Dolphins began to pick up pace with a couple of kills bringing the score to 9-8. With a JU timeout giving FGCU time to recuperate, the Eagle’s energy soared and they took the lead once again and ended the first set 24-18.
In the second set, the lead went back and forth. JU struggled to keep the lead but a final kill from senior Emily Laskelle allowed the Dolphins to take the second set 21-25.
The third set was a close fight as well. There were nine ties but JU’s energy was a tad stronger than the Eagles and allowed them to take this set also 23-24 making the game now 2-1. In the fourth set, the Eagles realized they were trailing and took the lead and never looked back ending the set 26-21, leaving the game now tied 2-2.
The fight got tougher and the lead continued to change from FGCU at 14-12 to a point by JU’s Sophomore Olga Nashtayeva tieing it up 14-14. However three kills in a row got the Eagles the victory in the last set 21-19, winning the game 3-2.
