Junior captain Briona Brown sunk a layup with six-tenths of second remaining to thwart a 17-4 run by the Ospreys and give the Dolphins a 54-52 victory in their conference opener at Jacksonville Veteran’s Memorial Arena in downtown Jacksonville.

Brown’s layup would not have been possible if not for a steal by redshirt junior guard Loliya Briggs, who was able get the ball to fellow redshirt junior guard LeDeyah Forte. Forte then contributed with an assist to Brown for the layup.

The Dolphins (6-8) had built a nine point lead towards the end of the first half, but saw that lead evaporate as the Ospreys (9-7) went on a 9-2 run to end the first half. The Ospreys continued on that hot streak as they opened up the second half on an 8-2 run. That run allowed the Ospreys to take the lead and extend it to 34-26 early in the second half.

Even though the Dolphins were down, they never considered themselves out of the competition. They rode Brown’s hot hand to their next 10 points bringing the Dolphins even with the Ospreys at 42 points.

“As captain on the team, it’s my job to make sure the girls are ready to go into the second half and it was imperative that we do so,” Brown said.

Brown did her job as captain by getting the team ready for the second half, but she did her job as a leader by finding a way to get the winning bucket for the Dolphins.

Brown was the Dolphins’ leading scorer with 16 points. Sophomore guard Sherranda Reddick led all Dolphin reserves with 13 points in 33 minutes of play.

The Lady Dolphins look to make it four straight wins as they head to DeLand, FL on Wednesday to play the Haters of Stetson, which will continue conference play.
