The men’s soccer team hoped for a better start in Atlantic Sun conference play when they started the season; however, they couldn’t find the pieces needed to pull out wins. The Dolphins lost to Florida Gulf Coast 3-1 on Oct. 1 and followed it up with a 2-0 loss to their city rival, University of North Florida on Oct. 4.

The Dolphins hosted the FGC Eagles in their first conference game in which they were hoping to treat the packed house to a win. The game started in the right direction with an early goal just 16 seconds into the first half. The Dolphins couldn’t keep the momentum in their favor as FGCU squared the game at 1-1 going into halftime.

The Eagles added two more goals in the second half to take the win away from the Dolphins with a 3-1 final.

“A couple of mistakes allowed them to get back in the game to make it 1-1,” said Dolphins head coach Mauricio Ruiz. “At that point, I thought our guys lost a little bit of their confidence.”

The Dolphins’ second conference game was the “River City Rumble” at Hodges Stadium at UNF. UNF got their first win against JU since 2009, beating the Dolphins 2-0 in front of 1,146 people.

Helge Pierschmann scored both goals for the Ospreys, and sent the Dolphins home with 0-2 conference record and a 3-7 record on the season.

“That’s a learning experience for our freshmen,” Ruiz said after the loss to UNF. “We came to a lively environment and our guys didn’t handle that well.”

The Dolphins hope to turn things around when they travel to Appalachian State on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
