Late Heroics Lift JU

The softball team headed south to the FAU Classic, opening up against Harvard and Eastern Michigan.
Freshman Victoria Brown helped JU to a 5-1 victory in both the circle and the batters box. Brown went seven innings, striking out four and allowing just four hits. She also belted a home run aiding her cause.
“This was a good way to start the day,” JU head coach Ali Higgs said. “It took us a little bit to get going, but we played well. VB had a good outing to kick off the day.”
Sophomore Ashley Simon gave the Dolphins some insurance with a late two-run home run and finished with three RBIs.
In game two, the Dolphins offense was stagnant and JU fell to Eastern Michigan 8-0 in a shortened five-inning contest. The loss ended the Dolphins three-game winning streak.
“We didn’t come with our best effort,” said Higgs.
On Saturday, JU sent Brown back to the circle to conjure up some more dominance and she did just that.
Brown went 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs to get the win. Freshman Cecile Gomez earned her second save of the year with 1.2 innings of shutout ball.
Senior Sarah Simon knocked in three runs as the Dolphins went on to defeat the Michigan State Spartans 5-2.
In game two on Saturday, JU took on host Florida Atlantic. The game was close the entire time and took extra innings to decide a winner.
Junior Karson Tuck helped lift the Dolphins over the Owls with a two-out RBI single in the eighth inning. Tuck finished two-for-four with two RBI. Ashley Simon added a home run in the win.
“These were two great wins for us tonight,” said Higgs. “Our entire team played well and rose to occasion.”
In the finale on Sunday, the Dolphins needed extra innings again to decide their game against Ball State.
Trailing 3-1 in the sixth, Brown started the inning with a leadoff double. Junior Codi Kelly and freshman Emily Sanchez both singled loading the bases for the Dolphins. Ashley Simon singled home Brown, then Tuck plated Kelly, reaching base on an error, tying the game at three.
Ball State reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth leaving JU one last chance to win or force extras.
Codi Kelly laced an RBI triple tying the game for JU and sending it into extras.
In the top of the eighth, Ashley Simon advanced Adrienne Ramsay to third on a bunt single. Simon then stole second, putting runners on second and third with no outs.
Ball State retired the next two Dolphin batters, leaving JU with runners on second and third with two outs.
Junior Miranda Fleming singled, sending the ball into right field scoring Ramsay and Simon and advanced to second on an error. Fleming then moved up to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a bunt single by freshman Sable Lee.
“This was another great team win for us,” JU head coach Ali Higgs said. “I am proud of the way we kept chipping away at the lead until we got our opportunity to win it. We picked up some quality wins this weekend and I look forward to continuing the momentum Wednesday.”
The Dolphins went 4-1 on the weekend making them 14-5 on the season. They play a double-header at Georgia Southern before opening Atlantic Sun play this weekend at home against Lipscomb.
